[Project FeeTrail April 2015]: Regina Rica Rosarii

This month's Feet - trail goes to Regina Rica Rosarii. First five days of April was included in the holy week. So our family, together with our closest family friends, went to do station of the cross at the Regina Rica Rosarii in Tanay, Rizal, on a Maundy Thursday. It was such a beautiful, well-maintained place with a  huge Mama Mary statue situated on top of the hill.

Short story before climbing up the statue that the "cape"of mama mary symbolizes protecting her people and the child Jesus she was carrying had a sandal-snap accident because just like any kid, he once got scared of something and jumped to Mama Mary for protection.

Best tip I can share before going: Arrive Early. We arrived at 6am and went down at past 9:30 am, finding a lot of people lining up for the orientation. Yes, there is an orientation before you can explore the place.

I also noticed that the sunflowers lined, going up the Virgin Mary on top of the hill, all face the same way. I was told that they got their name because they "face the sun". I could have taken a lot of photos for blogging purposes during that trip, but it's lent and I assume that people probably don't want to go to some place sacred only to end up in someone's blog.

Anyway, I haven't been writing in this blog that much this month for I am busier with my life offline. I actually miss writing, it used to be therapeutic for me. I am actually thinking of disconnecting the auto publish function to my personal Facebook account, just because. I wasn't here for the hits anyway (but THANK YOU!)

I'm actually glad its going to be May tomorrow. I know internet meme's gonna be like:

I'm glad because when it's May, rain starts to drop by every now and then. Last year it rained heavily on my graduation day (April 26) but now, it's really hot. We need another term now for the dry season. I can't be writing every year how much I am hating not liking summer.

April was very busy for me. I asked something from the Universe at the start of the year and I am now receiving it, but more of that in the coming months.

How did your April go?

I laugh to be kind

I was 22 years old when I got a call from a publicist, asking me to write an article about being single in the city for an up and coming fashion magazine.

I was so giddy, feeling that in between coffee breaks and avail time in the BPO industry I might be plucked out of a building by the Universe and eventually become a writer. My article never made it. I got a feedback from the editor: " She's good... but she's young." I was like, What's my age got to do with it?! I really do not understand. And now, approximately nine years later, I know why.

When I was in my twenties,  I love the Sex and the City HBO Series. I donned Carrie Bradshaw because she is a writer (my dream) and likes to analyze (like me). My best friend is like SamanthaI haven't watched the series in a long time, like, 5 years and because I missed talking to my best friend, I decided to watch a few episodes of it. And I tell you, now that I am in my thirties, watching them now is a whole lot different experience compared to when I watched it in my twenties.Because when I was in my twenties, all I was able to take was the outfits, the shoes, the boys, sex, discussion, ladies lunching and cosmopolitan. Now that I am in same age bracket as the characters are, I can genuinely relate beyond the facade.

I don't want to gab everything on this post, but there is one episode that caught my eye recently. If you live in the Philippines, it's like a cultural SOP that they ask you when are you getting married, if you have one kid, when are you going to follow it up. If you've got two they ask you if you plan to have more. If you're single, they ask you why? Then comes the unsolicited pairing up, which, honestly I feel very embarrassed about.

Some years ago, a mommy friend of mine asked me to come hang at her place because according to her (and assuming that just because I am single) my weekends are free. In fact her words were "Come hang in my house since you seem like you're doing nothing on weekends". I am understanding enough to know that she probably mean well.

There's this one episode where Miranda and Carrie found themselves in a group of engaged women and asked them if they are seeing someone. Miranda, took over and made fun of herself:

Lady at the party: And what about you, Miranda? Seeing anyone special?
Miranda: Actually no, but I am seeing a whole bunch of unspecial guys. That's one of the requirements to date me, Are you Special? Sorry, move along, But if you have unspecial friends, could you give them my number. I'm serious! Do any of you have a completely unremarkable friend or maybe a houseplant I can go to dinner with on Saturday night?"
Lady at the party: She's hilarious!
Carrie (to Miranda, next scene): Hey, What the hell was going on in there? Felt like your comedy routine should have a two-drink minimum.
Miranda: We were standing in a group of married or engaged women. Just trying to avoid the pity party.
Carrie: And I thought it was a cocktail party.
Miranda: We were the only single people in there.
Carrie: Miranda. We're the only single people anywhere.
Miranda: Are you telling me you didn't see all those "Don't worry, you'll find someone" looks?
Carrie: Nope, didn't see 'em.
Miranda: Hey. Society views single people our age as sad and pathetic. I don't need that judgement hanging over my head, so I go on the offensive and I make them laugh.
Carrie: Okay Shecky! You know what? Sometimes I think people and couples look at us and wish they had our lives.
Miranda: No, we make them uncomfortable and they don't know what to say.
Carrie: And you're sure you're not overreacting?
Miranda: Yeah!

The next day, on Wall Street: (Miranda ran into a friend)
Miranda: Sheila! Hi! How are you?
Shiela: I'm fantastic! Oh gosh, Joe and l just got back from New Orleans. So how are you? Are you seeing anyone special?
But Miranda wasn't feeling very Shecky.
Miranda: Actually No, I'm not.
Shiela: Well, look, He's out there for you. You just haven't met him yet. right?
Miranda: Maybe, maybe not. I don't know if I believe all that. Maybe there isn't someone for everyone.
There it was: the truth. No Hallmark hope, no two-drink minimum.
Miranda: How is Joe? You guys have been married for how many years now?
Shiela: Five!
         Miranda: Wow!
Shiela: I bet you're thinking, "Where are the kids?" right? right? Well it's like I said to Joe, "We can have kids or gorgeous fabric without chocolate stains."
Miranda realized it's not just about being single. Everyone has a sore spot that needs a comedy routine.
And so Miranda laughed. Not because it was particularly funny, but because it was kind.

And you know what, recently I've been finding myself in certain "situations", seeing people's sore spots. Some disguise it and then show yours instead.  It is true that when people are uncomfortable, they do not know what to say. I will try not be one of those people who will point out the obvious sore spots. So despite the unsolicited advice, the uncalled for statements, the rude and insensitive comments, I made a conscious decision to try to laugh just because it is kind.
"She's good, but she's young."
So every time I remember that I was asked to write about being single in the city, I still cringe at the memory of it. I was just in my adulthood formative years playground and there I was feeling cocky about becoming a Carrie Bradshaw. Mostly because I remember what I wrote, even the words that I used. The editor was right. I am young. And honestly, I know nothing about what it is like to be single.

But I do now. :)

My sister is thirty-rrific!

This month, my sister turned thirty-rrific! I don't think I handled my turning 30 very well, but she did Most people freak out when they turn over to that age milestone (e.g. premature midlife crisis), but she accomplished so much as a person and woman. Here's just a few things why my sister rocked her 20s before 30 better than I did, passion-wise:

1. She took a break from college to figure out what her heart wants.
2. She passed her Interior Design Licensure exam on her first try.
3. She broke out of her expected career and became a full time Industrial Designer.
4. Four years before she hit 30, she turned one of her passions into another adventure.
5. She was actually invited by college professors to speak about her passion and inspire college students.

And...she was able execute her vision of long-tables-sitting-on-grass-dinner party last saturday!

[Project FeeTrail March 2015]: Firsts at Padre Pio's Shrine

Three firsts:

1. First time to attend Sunday mass at this church (where all church goers are 95% tourists).
2. First time to cover a wedding in this church.
3. First time to do make up of the sister of the groom.

I knew I wanted to see this church the first time my friend Aya instagrammed the photo of the cross. I couldn't help but stare, half-open mouthed while looking at the cross of this church. I like how the church is open air, salakot formed to keep in touch with Filipino culture, it also used local materials like bamboo, wood, etc.

March was very busy and humbling for me. I have a lot of stories but I'm too lazy to write as I go running from one project to another. Tiring but I am very, very, very grateful.

How about you?

The Princess and the Queen

Once upon a time, I worked for the Queen as her Girl Friday.

I watched her manage her kingdom, from getting to know each of her farmers and employees, to their families, up to their children. I watched how she does the troubleshooting and rehabilitation of her kingdom's challenges.

The Queen's Princess was always involved too. At such young age, she was involved in the livelihood activities of the kingdom compared to any adult my age.

There were times when the farmer's children's needs had to come first, leaving the Princess alone with the Queen's lady-in-waiting. I have never seen the Princess throw a tantrum, while the rest of children her age were all whining.

One event, we all sat in a long banquet for supper. I watched the Queen get the Princess' plate and helped herself with servings of food. I saw her hand over the plate to the Princess, before getting food for the others.

Which made me recall that many times we were together, I saw how the Princess comes first in littlest things. Like in a conversation, when the young Princess had to interrupt and ask a question, strongly driven by curiosity. I never saw the Queen throw an irritated glance nor a stern look, no matter how busy we are in the middle of a certain royal duty. The Queen pauses for a few minutes to address her concern. I also watch how she takes time to educate and inform the Princess no matter how absurd, how complicated, and how difficult things to explain to a child.

Which amazes me because the Princess grew up to be selfless, understanding, never was a spoiled brat and so mature for her age that sometimes it silently puts myself to shame. At such a young age, not even two digits years old, I have more hang ups than her, to think I am older.

"You must be so lucky to have such parents who taught you the parenting skills you have, "I told the Queen once. Casually. The Queen was very much secure with herself that she likes getting asked straightforwardly. "I mean look at the Princess, you did more than a great job."I added.

" I only learned that through my own experience of finding out the core of problems in our kingdom, mostly its about proper education and communication " she said. "And I have established that as the Princess'mother, her needs had to come first when it comes to me so that in the future, she will know that all these things that I do for our people, is something that is not to be jealous of. She will never have to compete with others, because when it comes it to me, she is confident that she always comes first."

And through the years, I understood and watched how the Princess grew up to be the people's champion.

Something about today made me recall this story.

Don't waste your @talk2GLOBE points! (or how I got a KFC Krusher for free)

"I called to claim my rebate of 10 cents!" said our American client who called on the phone. I used to work in the Business Process Outsourcing Industry that was one of the interesting calls I received.

"Maám, may I repeat. You called to claim your ten cents." I said, with emphasis on the ten cents.

"Yes" she said. She probably knows what I am trying to say. "Listen honey, imagine if one million Americans don't claim their 10 cents from your company, you do the math on how much money yáll get for free!"

Which reminded me of GLOBE points.

Honestly, I don't really care about GLOBE's reward points. It just accumulates and encourages me to redeem it but I do not know how and what to redeem. I thought, well, it's just a few points...until I realized that 1 point is equivalent to 1 peso and I have a virtual Php 170.00 waiting for me, ready for consumption:

Then I saw this:

You can actually buy using your points!

I tried first what else I can buy that I like using my GLOBE points, but a purchase at KFC is more realistic for me.

So I went to the counter, texted a number: BUY <space> store globe number <space> amount and sent it to 4438 and bought something I like from KFC.

I have one week and a half to decide the next order amounting to Php100.00 that I still have in my Globe Rewards.

Thank you GLOBE for my free KFC Krushers!

Don't waste your GLOBE points!  Imagine if one million Globe subscribers won't redeem their 170 points/rewards... you all know what I'm saying. Now go and redeem it before March 31, 2015.

Happy, Happy Birthday to our Korean magnet, @mariyaye_

When five friends went to Boracay last November, there's only one lady who stood out among us, and turned out to be Korean tourist guys' favorite. None other than, Yeye, formerly known as Peargie! The one with the friendliest aura to strangers!

And because it is our birthday tradition to have a Birthday Photoshop battle spree, if course Yeye will not be spared!

Dear Yeye, because you're a Korean-in-Boracay magnet, it is imperative that your birthday Photoshop spree be Korean-themed as well!

PANALO TO!

Happy Happy Birthday Yeye! Wishing you happiness in love, career, and family! And of course, more budol-budol travel opportunities with you soon!

P.S. All these fabulous photoshopped photos were made by Aya!

F*ck the 5 year plan

Would you believe that before my college graduation, I had plans A, B, C, and D?

Plan A was to be a creative writer for TV networks. Plan B was to start as editorial assistant in a magazine publishing company. Plan C was to go to school again and pursue 2 years of Information Technology course since I already have my Bachelor's degree anyway. Plan D was to apply in a call center - I had no idea what that is until over coffee one day, Chichi, my college roommate (who graduate a year ahead of me) told me that if you want to earn a big salary, fast, work in a call center. I was itching for independence that time so I said I will give call center industry a year then move on to my dream job.

I stayed for six years in the BPO (call center) industry, started in an entry level agent, assistant trainer, QA monitor, QA Lead and finally a Operations Supervisor/Team Lead before I hit quarter-life crisis at 26 and quit my job.

Five years ago, I remember literally dragging myself to work, just waiting for payday. I keep looking for what they call zest for life. I have a closet full of high heeled shoes, gadgets that I bought out of a whim, pricey dinners and cocktails with friends in my social calendar but that was it. My apartment was my little space of sanctuary, and on weekends I looked forward doing laundry, watching reruns of Friends and Sex and the City, go to church and cap the Sunday night with an alone time at a bookstore or a coffee shop. If I didn't have the energy, I would just call Jollibee delivery and pig out Php200 worth of junk food all by myself.

It's not like I did not try to go back to my dream. I did. In fact, I remember personally handing over my Resume at Summit Media when their office was still in Robinsons Galleria. My hands were shaking and Vic, my friend in BPO, was giving the ultimate shove to finally submit it. I did not hear from Summit. When my co-Supervisor, Jimi and I were make up shopping at an exclusive sale in a popular make up brand's head office, I realized I want to work there. Very timely that I saw a friend of mine who works there and referred me to their Human Resource Department.

When I did not hear from any of my applications, I figured out, okay I will give this BPO industry one last try until something better comes along. I got an interview with another company, they raved about my performance, honestly I also had great references and inside connections, but that was it. I came home to Laguna one summer weekend and got jealous by my friends laid back life and how they all seem to be okay with it. My parents suggested graduate school, but it was already too late to start the first semester.

It was in the middle of an absent-minded interview that I decided to go for Graduate School. The interviewer asked me to tell something about myself and all I was able to say was..." I'm Kea and currently I am a Operations Team Lead, I like reading books, hanging out with friends, going out of town, (and then realized I sounded like such a total blah, then added)...and this year I will start my Masteral Degree."

You know, they say, when you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen for you. Because exactly two weeks later, I was able to file my resignation and pursue my graduate studies at the start of the first semester. I thought, I would just finish my degree for two years and go back to the city armed with a new degree. Well, that was the plan and that was in 2010.

Borrowing from Karen's Salmansohn's words, "In five years, 5 years ago I never would have envisioned my life the way it is today.". In five years I have:

1. Moved back and lived with my folks and just when I thought I couldn't handle parental guidance again, it turned out to be nice.
2. Lost some long-time friends and understood why it happened for the best.
3. Lost my father, two years after moving back home. To this day, I think this is the ultimate reason why the universe had to uproot me from the city. I do not want to regret not having spent time with the last two years of my father's life.
4. Made new friends, like quality friends. Some people think they are too old to make new ones, but I got really lucky. I starts with the age old advice that if you want a good friend, you have to be good one. I got lucky to have reconnected and established friends from high school (apart from the circle that I kept all these years).
5. Earned my MS Degree after 3 years. I've also been a working student for 3 semesters.
6. Traveled to places I never really seriously planned visiting like Japan, for instance.
7. Worked for the government. I never planned on working for the government, but here I am.
8. Helped launch my sister's floral designing business and eventually got into the wedding industry (since I've been behind-the-wedding-scenes since 2011)
9. Finally found a job that I actually like. I used to think that I probably will never find a job that I like doing, but I got it, most of the time. And I am grateful. Ate Ting, one of my college roommate, told me that it is easy to find a job, but the hard part is finding the job that you love.
10. Made peace with my past and myself...and honestly I have a better, personal relationship with God.

And all of these are not really in my concrete plans. Sure, I do not have a house to show or a car to brag, but I have secret little victories that I earned in those 5 years. Sometimes, I fear the future. I sometimes ask if it's still necessary to plan. When I turned 30, I kept bugging my 30+ friends what to expect in my thirties. Sure, my twenties were a lot of fun, so much fun that I look back with a smile on my face thinking "I can't believe I did that". My friends told me that thirties will cover the big decisions that one will make in their lives. I want to at least be prepared for what's in store for me as a precaution. But then last year, I saw this on Facebook:

"If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans..."

And when I feel anxious about the future (which is often), I am grateful to have found this on pinterest:
