The last book to complete my @JaneGreen Collection

I remember my friend Faye telling me that her choice of books never really fell under the mainstream bandwagon. I have the same issue. Yes I did have other books like the Twilight saga, but I’ve been searching for Jane Green Books  in Book Sales specifically, beause it feels more like a treasure hunt rather than just going to a nearby bookstore and paying the regular price.

My friends (who are my fellow Booksale addict) kept texting and calling me up whenever there is a Jane Green book but most of the time I always reply with “Oh.. I have that already!”

Can you imagine how wide my smile is when my Kuya Stew finally handed over the latest Jane Green Book that I’ve been lusting for since last year?
This is what my Kuya Stew got me! YEY!

The promises to keep version is the US version but I specifically asked for “The Love Verb” because I know I could not find that version in the Philippines and I always have this strong feeling that I might find “Promises to Keep” in Booksales (though it’s super available in NBS, Fullybooked and Powerbooks)

So to be honest, during the Pacquiao rounds, I keep on opening that brand new softbound cover and carefully running my fingers through the pages, while trying hard not to smell the paper. (Addict!)

Anyway, while he was out I immediately covered the book with plastic cover because is some liquid will get spilled on it and it’s not even a day old in my hands, I’m really going to be so pissed!

I can now say that I have the complete set of books by Jane Green. Thank you so much Kuya Stew!

But wait... I just heard Jane Green's new book "Another piece of my heart" is coming out on March 13, 2012.

Okay, I'll wait before I make another request again. LOL!

To Rachels and Alices

Rachel Danburry tried to ignore her husband’s infidelities. She told herself he was simply possessed of extraordinary charm, but when he has an affair a woman called Candice Carter, a former starlet for Paramount and owner of the town theatre, she could no longer pretend she didn’t know what was going on.Rachel sought solace, and revenge, in the arms of Edward Rutherford, a neighbor who had always been pleasant, had always been willing to stop for a chat, and until Rachel set out to – successfully-seduce him, nothing more. But Rachel and Edward fell in love, and eventually Rachel had to make a choice between a love that was more meaningful than anything she had ever known, and her husband. She chose her husband. And for the rest of her life Rachel learned to turn a blind eye. She learned to switch off the light in her bedroom, trying not to think of the fact that he husband was not lying beside her, trying not to think about where he was or who he might be with.
-excerpt from the Prologue of Jane Green’s Spellbound (UK Version) / To Have and to Hold (US Version)

There must be a reason why I have that book, both versions by Author Jane Green.
There must be reason why I bought the book in 2009 but have never read it until summer of 2011.
There must be a reason why I am out of town when I finally got the time and chance to read it, and the resort that I stayed in with a friend (who was in a similar state as Rachel’s) does not have TV or internet connection. Just an intermittent cellular phone signal. I get it now.

Please be informed that this is not a book review and there are no spoiler alerts. Although I recommend buying the book, it cannot be understood fully by many, only those who have worn Rachel’s shoes.

Jane Green’s Spellbound is about the wife Alice and her philandering husband Joe, who’s got a mistress at work named Josie. Alice and Joe moved in to the house where Rachel Danburry used to live with her philandering husband as well and the house was said to have a curse that whoever lives there, the couple breaks up. It just so happen that Alice and Joe moved in that same house.

I would like to cite something from the book about Joe:
“Occasionally Joe feels guilty about the women he sleeps with, but not so guilty as to stop, and anyway they have no bearing on in his relationship with Josie. As long as she doesn’t know, how can it possibly hurt her, for Joe would never want to hurt Josie (the mistress who caused the breakup of his marriage -ed), just as he never wanted to hurt Alice (his first wife -ed).”-   (Green,2003, p. 437, Spellbound)

And to understand the “Joes” in the world is infuriating. They have an addiction, a sickness that will not be cured by just one Josie.

I admire the strength and sacrifice of those “Rachels” who can turn a blind eye and pretend like nothing is wrong because once a Joe, always a Joe. Those who know that “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me” but chose to try to forget and stick around anyway. Never mind if the person lying next to them in the other side of the bed is not really the person they thought they were. Never mind if they really cannot penetrate and knows what goes on in the mind of their own Joes. Never mind if they watch him walk around spaced out. Never mind if they cannot conquer and control their Joe’s mind about who and what he really is thinking about.

But most of all, I admire the “Alices” I know. Those who are brave enough to stand up for their own good, who chose not to be used, who made decisions that are fair for themselves and not out of anger, those who chose to be happy, who chose to be strong.

And to the “Alice” that I know that shared a hand-me-down advice from a pastor who gave her this advice:

“The only problems that you have are the things that you can control. The thing/people/events that you have no control of means that they are not your problem.”
Dear Another “Alice”,

“Joe” is not your problem because you cannot control him and what he does behind your back. Your problem is how and what you chose to deal with and how you’re going to put up with him.

Your friend in the book,

“Emily”

Anti-Idle Mind Movement

I am making a move to preoccupy my mind with reading books to prevent my mind from thinking about... things that I should no longer be thinking about. (so to speak)

So with gradschool stuff coming up ( a breather, actually) I intend to have a Plan B to relax my mind through Chick Literature books.

I'm excited for October because I'll be getting new books from my cousin Stew that I requested, but I am now more ecstatic that Kuya Stew sent me Chick Lit books in advance! ( Thanks Kuya! I'm looking forward to the other batch when you arrive! )

Kuya Stew said that he got me tons of books (with a testimonial from his sister Chimayne as well) and said that I will be reading them for the next five years. I've got five words for you, Kuya:

Super. Looking. Forward. To. It.

Books by Meg Cabot
I was really ecstatic when he got me the UK version of the hard to find Jane Green Books!
The UK version of Jane Green Books ( To have and To Hold and Dune Road)
So happy that I strongly feel that this deserves a post of  its own. I keep on going through the pages one by one with a wide smile on my face.

Thank you so much Kuya! See you in a few months! :)

Much love,
Your excited cousin

Oh Book sales!

Today, while in the middle of the Pahiyas Festival Heat, my sisters got me this Jane Green Book from a Booksale!

Thank you so much sis!
Second Chance by Jane Green for only Php115

I got her new books The Beach House and Dune Road at a book sale which means I am looking for two more, that's Second Chance and Promises to keep. I keep telling myself these past few days that I have this really great feeling that I will get to complete all her books (which I consider one of my prized possessions) and I am looking for one more (Promises to keep) before I can confidently say I have all the Jane Green Books ( because majority of the first ones that I collected is no longer available at the local Bookstores.)

But the catch of all catch is... I must find it in a book sale/ book bargain so that I don't get to pay the regular price. Jane green books usually sell for Php600-1000 plus, depending on the cover. I got The Beach House for only Php99 and Dune Road for only Php50! Super deal!

I discovered Jane Green during a book sale and I got hooked ever since. She was not even recommended by anyone to me so I am super glad that I discovered her all by  my self.  Her novel that I first got was Straight Talking, and from then on I got hooked on Chick Literature.

I'm glad book sales are not limited to reference books alone, I actually bought my Bridget Jones series in really mint condition for only Php95. ( Bridget Jones Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason).

I love, love, love book sales!!! :)

I Heart Book Sales!

I love Book sales! I'm pretty sure book enthusiasts share the same feeling. That's why I knew that kindle wouldn't work for me because nothing compares to the feeling of holding a book.

I was just telling my professor in grad school last Saturday how I don't really like reading ebooks, ( almost all our reference books are sent via email in the form of ebooks, pdf files.... Oh technology!) because I really like the feeling of holding the book. Especially if it's really old, brownish and "crunchy" like the pages could crack any minute!

I get really sad when there's a book sale and I couldn't find anything good to buy.

Weeks before, I found myself in National Bookstore's Book sale only to find out that there isn't anything good to buy. Therefore, I went home empty-handed. :(

But yesterday, I went to the same branch of National Bookstore and found my self buying these:
I got these three for only P199 and in mint condition! Don't you just love book sales?
The highlight of my latest Book Sale experience is getting a hold of Jane Green's "New Generation" book, called The Beach House ( I call it New Generation because I have almost all her previous chick literature novels, which I prefer to call "Her Classics". ) This book usually sells at Fullybooked or Powerbooks for at least a thousand pesos ( not really sure about the price anymore), I only got mine for Php99!

Minty Mint Mint Condition

I also got the 1001 Questions to ask before you get married, and my sister have someone else in mind to give it to. But the really cute find that I got is " Give the Bitch Her Chocolate". I love this item and there's someone in mind I'd like to give this to.

Because it is just so cute and bitchy... I figured out that that cute thing deserves her own entry. :) ( Which I will be writing about, next! )

What are your favorite books?
